It’s tough enough to get a job in these economic times and it’s even tougher for those who don’t have access to reliable transportation. A primary goal for The Green Impact Zone is to help increase employment rates in the area (which is as low as 50 percent in some locations).
As a part of this effort, The Green Impact Zone will host “Opportunity Road,” a transportation fair, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, at the Green Impact Zone office (4600 Paseo, Kansas City, Mo.) to help show residents how alternative modes of transportation can help them extend their job search and get them where they need to go while saving money.
Local transit agencies and resource programs will be on hand to talk with residents about mobility options and ways to save money on transportation — the second-largest expense for most households.
The fair will stress to residents how they can don’t need a car to get where they need to go (a common misconception in today’s society). The Green Impact Zone wants residents to see that commuting to jobs across the metro is possible with different modes of transportation access.
- Learn about bus routes operated by The Metro and The JO that connect to Green Impact Zone neighborhoods. Get answers to questions about planning a trip or riding the bus. Tour a hybrid MAX bus. Ride along on a JO bus route to see where new shelters, signs and a transit center are being planned for the Shawnee Mission Parkway corridor.
- Find out how to register with the RideShare Program to search for carpool matches. Pick up tips for getting the most out of a carpool arrangement. Learn about RideShare’s Guaranteed Ride Home service that commuters can use in case of emergency.
- Get information about how to commute safely by bicycle from RevolveKC.
- Enjoy free refreshments and door prizes!

We are working hard every day to help build a brighter and cleaner community that our residents are proud to live, work and play.
This past weekend the Historic Manheim Park Neighborhood Association hosted its semi-annual Neighborhood Cleanup. The cleanup was followed by a community cookout. Manheim Park residents were joined by over 25 members of the Hyde Park neighborhood, Rockhill neighborhoods, University of Kansas students and members of the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
As summer approaches, residents in Manheim Park took action to improve and beautify their neighborhood by cleaning up vacant lots, removing tires and planting in the neighborhood community garden. The Green Impact Zone worked in partnership with Kansas City, Mo., Neighborhood Housing Services to provide dumpsters for the neighborhood clean-up event.
Helping people and neighborhoods build their own capacity to make a difference is a key strategy in the Green Impact Zone. Historic Manheim Park plans to have their next neighborhood clean-up in July 2010.
