The Department of Energy recently announced a change in energy efficiency standards for residential clothes washers and dishwashers that will save consumers $20 billion in energy and water costs.

The new standards were based on feedback from manufacturers, consumer groups, and environmental advocates, and are designed to dramatically increase savings while retaining features that consumers like. The new clothes washers standard will save households approximately $350 over the lifetime of the appliance, and the new standards for dishwashers will use approximately 15% less energy and 20% less water, directly providing consumers with savings on monthly bills.

The appliance energy savings are in keeping with the Green Impact Zone’s commitment to a 15% reduction in home energy use, through its partnership with EnergyWorks KC.
